Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these medications must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
