Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
